The National Veterans Art Museum prides itself on creating a space for military personnel, veterans, and civilians have meaningful discussions about war. Part history and part art museum, NVAM features artworks by entirely made by veterans and about experiences in combat. A permanent, interactive installation, The Things They Carried, displays equipment, rations, and personal items carried by soldiers in the Vietnam War. You’re welcome to try on the helmet, heft a rucksack over your shoulder, and read personal letters to and from family members. This small museum is welcoming, but humbling, and staff love to discuss this important collection with visitors. Bring tissues.
