Come to the Oriental Institute on beautiful University of Chicago Campus for one of the most extensive collections of artifacts from the ancient world. “The Orient” as the area was known when the museum opened, includes ancient Egypt, Persia, Syria, Mesopotamia, Nubia and Israel, and artifacts include everything from jewelry that you wish was in the gift shop to mummified birds. The ginormous Lamassus, a human-headed winged bull, beats the sphinx for Coolest Ancient Fantasy Creature. Plein Air Cafe is right around the corner if you want need to nibble on an almond croissant while contemplating the glorious past.
