Children’s museums are everywhere, and finding one is a pretty easy feat, especially in a metropolis as large as Chicago. But Bronzeville Children’s Museum, located on the Southside of Chicago, is the first of its kind. Hailed as the first and only African American Children’s Museum in the country, BCM is part children’s playland, part African American history museum. While you’ll find some of the usual children’s museum suspects (i.e. an exhibit on S.T.E.M., a section about healthy eating and exercise), BCM also focuses on telling stories about professional accomplishments by African Americans throughout history. In a predominately black neighborhood, these kinds of exhibitions give local young people opportunities to see themselves reflected inside cultural institutions, which are historically white spaces. A highlight is the museum’s awesome Tour of Bronzeville exhibition, giving the kids a window into the history of their own backyards.
