When the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum opened in 2005, it quickly became the most popular and most visited presidential library in the country. Located in Springfield, IL the museum is a thorough celebration of our state license plate hero. The building itself is insanely pretty, and looks straight out of that so-bad-its-good film National Treasure starring Nicholas Cage. The museum veers a bit outside the boundaries of the traditional history museum experience; you’ll frequently encounter life size dioramas starring Honest Abe, making your visit feel a little more like Disneyland than a trip to your local cultural institution. While you’re here, check out the library where admission is free of charge. The museum is open daily from 9 to 5pm, but the box office stops selling tickets at 4, so plan ahead.
