Built in 1836 for Henry B. Clarke, the Clarke House Museum is a classic Greek-Revival style structure. The mission of the museum is to give visitors a window into family life in Chicago during the city’s formative years before the Civil War, when much of our current metropolis was undeveloped prairie land. Not surprisingly, Clarke House Museum has been through alot in its 154 year history: the house survived several fires, was owned by a church, and has been moved twice. The house is now located in the Chicago Women’s Park in the Prairie Avenue Historic District just east of Chinatown. While admission is free, hours are sparse; the museums hosts tours at 1 and 3pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
